About Us

Who are The Wild Nomads?

Hey! We’re Ben & Ashlyn, a couple from Western Australia who simply refuse to settle down. We seem to have a somewhat unhealthy obsession with travel which can only be remedied by venturing out into the wilderness for a double dose of nature. You see, cities kind of make us nervous, suburbs make us feel trapped and it doesn’t take long for shopping complexes to make us feel sick. But out in the wild exploring places like lush rainforests, towering mountain ranges or endless deserted coastlines is where we feel at home.

The wild places use to be escape from reality on weekends, loading up the car with camping gear, food and supplies before motoring off for a mere 48 hours of freedom. Maybe once a year we would get a extended 2-4 week holiday which would allow us to explore further from home but this never felt like long enough.
The thing that kept us coming back to civilization was our jobs. Of course we had to work, how else would we pay our bills and afford to travel? Suddenly it occurred to us that maybe we didn’t need to come back for our jobs, at the time our jobs weren’t quite what you would call our dream jobs. We figured if we focused our efforts on spending less we might just be able to put enough money away to support ourselves for an extended period of time and say goodbye to our regular working lives for a while atleast.

So that’s what we did.

We cut back on spending, saved like crazy and bought a big old Land Rover, affectionally naming it Watson. It felt pretty hard at times but by the end of it we had saved more money then we ever thought possible and had endless possibilities for travel laid out before us.

We had a grand plan to travel overland around Australia but at the same time we wanted to plan as little of the trip as possible. This gave us the freedom to go where we wanted, when we wanted. We had no idea how long we would be on the road for, no idea how much it would cost and no idea what we would experience along the way.

It was a massive adventure spanning 18 months, 60,000km and absolutely crammed full of excitement, adventure and freedom. We welcome you to have a look around our blog and share some of the stories from our big trip. And if you have any questions we would love you to ask away, one of the primary objectives of this blog is to show you that dreams needn’t stay dreams.

Our Adventure is far from over yet though.
It’s a big old world out there and we plan on getting amongst it.

Dream big,
Ben & Ashlyn
